Pediatric Immunology and Vaccination
نویسنده
چکیده
While the majority of scientific evidence indicates that foals are immunocompetent at birth, vaccination is complicated by interference by passively transferred maternal antibody. In addition, there is considerable clinical evidence of poor resistance to disease or response to primary vaccinations in the first year of life. Against this background it is critical to identify and develop potent vaccination regimes to generate effective immune responses in foals. Immunization is highly effective in preventing infectious diseases and therefore an indispensable public health measure. Allergic patients deserve access to the same publicly recommended immunizations as non-allergic patients unless risks associated with vaccination outweigh the gains. We report a 15-month-old boy who developed an ulcer in the left axillary fold following bacillus Calmette-Guerin vaccination. Subsequent immunologic and genetic studies led to the diagnosis of chronic granulomatous disease. His mother had "lupus-like" lesions, described in some carriers of this disease, that were thus related to her son's diagnosis. Although in healthy subjects this vaccination...
